Bone Marrow Therapy – Stem Cells

There is a recent interest in “orthobiologic” therapies to stimulate healing and reduce pain. Bone marrow aspirate (BMA) is a biologic that is derived from a patient’s own bone marrow. Concentrated BMA is high in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which are known to be critical in biological processes such as tissue regeneration and bone formation.

Stem cells help to create new cells in existing healthy tissues, and they may also help to repair injured or damaged tissues. They are the basis for the specific cell types that comprise each organ in the body.

When stem cells divide, they create progenitor cells. Progenitor cells can differentiate into more specialized functions, such as brain cells, red blood cells, or – of particular interest to orthopedic surgeons – tissue cells, such as bone or cartilage.

Orthopedic surgeons focus their attention on mesenchymal stem cells, which are obtained from living adult tissue. Dr. Poovendran is currently performing injections using BMA, as he feels the evidence supports these sources as proven methods of self-healing and the lack of bodily rejection.

Bone marrow stromal cells can, in the proper environment, differentiate into cells that are part of the musculoskeletal system. They can help to form cells of bone, tendon, cartilage, ligament, and further bone marrow.

Adult stem cells were previously thought to be limited when compared to embryonic stem cells. But new research suggests that adult stem cells have the potential to generate other types of cells as well. The evidence from stem cell injections is promising, with most patients experiencing reduced pain and improved activity levels after receiving this treatment. However, Dr. Poovendran makes it clear to his patients that these procedures are still investigational.

The bone marrow process is a same-day procedure which takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Typically, you may drive yourself to and from the procedure. The doctor will explain the entire process to you before your therapy.
