Non-Surgical Treatments

At Orthopedix MD (formally Meli Orthopedic Centers of Excellence), our highly trained physicians always consider a non-surgical approach before turning to surgery. Our physicians are experts at diagnosing the cause of pain and finding the most appropriate ambulatory aids. If surgery cannot be avoided, our skilled orthopedic surgeons and caring staff will walk you through the decision making, surgery and recovery process every step of the way.

Non-Surgical or Surgical?

To determine the best treatment options for you – surgical or non-surgical – we will do a complete orthopedic evaluation consisting of several components, including a medical history; a physical examination to assess range of motion, stability, strength and alignment; X-rays to determine the extent of damage and occasionally blood tests, an MRI or bone scan.

After the evaluation and diagnosis, we will discuss all possible treatment options with you. We will make you aware of all potential risks or complications associated with any procedure before you make your final decision. One of the deciding factors includes understanding what each procedure can and cannot accomplish. At Orthopedix MD, our physicians take time to explain to you the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment option, so you can make an informed decision.

Orthopedix MD physicians can offer a number of on-site, non-surgical treatment options, including anti-inflammatory medications, orthotics and injections to relieve joint pain and stiffness, when appropriate.

Injections

At Meli Orthopedics, we offer patients both traditional corticosteroid and epidural steroid injections (a combination of a corticosteroid with a local anesthetic pain relief medicine). Corticosteroids are strong anti-inflammatory medicines. Decreasing swelling and inflammation can take pressure off nerves and other soft tissues to relieve pain.

PRP Therapy

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are given to speed the body's own healing process. In many instances, PRP therapy is replacing traditional orthopedic surgery for conditions ranging from soft tissue injuries (tendonitis, muscle tears, ligamentous injuries) to various joint afflictions, such as a torn meniscus or mild to moderate arthritis.

In this therapy, platelets are drawn from your own blood supply, and then injected in concentrated amounts at the site of injury to relieve pain for orthopedic disorders and injuries and stop inflammation.

Dr. Gayan Poovendran offers PRP therapy as one of the treatments he offers for sports injuries.

DME

In some cases, your injury or condition may necessitate the use of durable medical equipment to ensure a fast and effective recovery. This equipment may include:

  • Knee braces
  • Ankle braces
  • Foot braces
  • Carpal tunnel supports
  • Back supports
  • Cervical collars
  • Tennis elbow straps

In addition, devices known as orthotics can correct structural problems in your feet that can lead to knee, hip and spine pain or degenerative arthritis. At Meli Orthopedics, our expert physicians and caring staff will help select and order the best DME for your particular situation.
