Joint Replacement Surgery Fort Lauderdale, Margate, FL

Total Joint Replacement

Arthritis is the most common reason for chronic joint pain and disability. When more conservative treatments fail to offer lasting relief, you may benefit from surgical joint replacement.

At Orthopedix MD in South Florida - Meli Orthopedic Centers of Excellence - , our orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Paul Meli, is experienced in the latest minimally invasive techniques available for the replacement of hip and knee joints, as well as joint revisions.

Joint replacement surgery, also called arthroplasty, involves removing the damaged portion of the hip or knee and replacing it with an artificial joint that allows for pain-free movement.

Joint revision surgery is performed to remove a previously implanted artificial joint and replace it with a new one. Revision arthroplasty may be necessary for a number of reasons: the artificial joint may loosen, infection may develop in the joint, one of the bones around the joint may be fractured, or part of the implant may break or wear down.

Anterior Hip Joint Replacement

As joints that bear a great deal of weight over the course of your lifetime, hips are particularly vulnerable to “wear and tear.” The hip is one of the most commonly replaced joints. Osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis, is the main reason for hip replacement surgery. Arthritis causes the protective cartilage in the hip joint to wear away, leading to bone-on-bone rubbing, swelling and pain.

Traditional methods of hip replacement, or arthroplasty, involve surgically cutting surrounding muscle to reach the hip joint. Anterior hip replacement is performed through smaller incisions and muscle tissue is temporarily separated instead of being cut. The damaged portion of the joint is removed and replaced with artificial implants called prosthetics. The implant allows for pain-free movement. This method means shorter rehabilitation times, less pain following the procedure and better outcomes for our patients.

Knee Joint Replacement

The knee is the largest joint in the body, and as such, it is vulnerable to injury. Knees bear a great deal of weight over the course of a lifetime and can show signs of damage through pain, swelling and loss of range of motion. Arthritis is the most common cause of debilitating chronic knee pain.

For many, knee replacement is the only way to relieve pain, restore motion and improve quality of life. Knee replacement surgery, also called knee arthroplasty, involves removing the damaged portion of the knee and replacing it with artificial implants called prosthetics. Knee replacement is highly successful for relieving pain and restoring joint function.

Shoulder Joint Replacement

Although shoulder joint replacement is less common than hip or knee joint replacement, it is just as successful in relieving joint pain for those who need it. Osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis, is a common reason for shoulder joint replacement surgery, as are several other conditions such as post-traumatic arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, and severe fractures.

The shoulder can perform movements in more directions and to greater extents than any other joint in our body. But because it can perform so many movements, the shoulder is vulnerable to stress and injury.

Before arthroscopic surgery existed, surgeons made large incisions that affected the surrounding joint structures and tissues. They had to open the shoulder joint to see it and perform surgery. An arthroscopy requires small incisions and is guided by a small viewing instrument. Arthroscopy is less invasive than traditional surgical methods and has a decreased risk of infection and shorter recovery period.
